The Kite Route
Wednesday, May 16, 2018 - Mayhoffer-Singletree Trail
Phase 1: This Wednesday evening found us car-shuttling the Mayhoffer-Singletree trail, which is another segment of the "Dirty Bismark" mountain bike trail. We left a car at 66th street, shuttled to the trailhead in Superior, then walked back to the car at 66th for a warm, sunny evening on the high plains. According to the sign pictured above, the Mayhoffer-Singletree trail was once part of "The Kite Route" railway line between Denver and Boulder.
Phase 2: Village Tavern, at Flatiron Crossing.
Phase 3: Village Tavern Bar. Chocolate sundaes and coffee all around.
Afterwards, we pondered an 1880 map of Colorado, hanging in the restaurant foyer. S thought the map seemed fake, since it included the small towns of Kiowa and Elbert. A quick Google search revealed that in 1880, Kiowa was known as Middle Kiowa (Wikipedia).
Further web searches revealed the VT map to be a modern artist reproduction, now available on Shutterstock (assuming this is the same map).
In contrast, here are some maps from the period that correctly label Middle Kiowa:
Rand McNally map (1879), from the Library of Congress.
Thayer's New Map of Colorado (1880), from the David Rumsey Map Collection.
