Gleðileg Jól

Wednesday, December 25, 2019 — North Iceland

Phase 1

Wandering about the property taking photos here and there of the ice and snow at a golden hour that lasted at least three hours. Sunrise blends with sunset, with at least two hours of “blue hour” on either side of the day.

Phase 2

P and KK cooked up a hearty, traditional Icelandic Christmas dinner of hyrggur (rack of lamb), potatoes, peas, salad, pureed cauliflower, and pickled beets.

Phase 3

Coffee, cookies, and ice cream!

Later that evening, with clear skies and calm weather, we were fortunate to see some Christmas auroras. Dim and brief, just long enough for a chorus or two of Silent Night.

Questions of the Night

  1. What predator (or other circumstance) would make holes in duck eggs?

  2. What is the English name for “calendula?”

  3. Who is behind the pen-name “Lars Kepler?”
