A Dog a Day

Wednesday, April 3, 2019 — Sanitas Valley

Phase 1: Sanitas Valley, amid bounding herds of maniacal canines having their time in the wild, shouting hellos and goodbyes to all and sundry, yanking leashes hither and yon, diving into every heath and moor, gathering scents and textures like bees in pollen, building panoplies of pheromones, Monets of memories in their smiling, happy noses. Or, put another way:

Sanitas Valley

amid bounding herds of maniacal canines
having their time in the wild,
shouting hellos and goodbyes to all and sundry,

yanking leashes hither and yon,
diving into every heath and moor,
gathering scents and textures

like bees in pollen, building
panoplies of pheromones,
Monets of memories

in their smiling, happy noses.

Phase 2: West End Tavern, not quite as loud as last week’s Pasta Jay’s, but close. At least the cornbread was good. STL vs Pitt on TV, and everyone in the bar a Cardinals fan, for some reason. With two outs and bases loaded, Pirates at bat in the bottom of the 10th, and a conference on the mound, we signed the check and slipped away. Someone would win, eventually.

Phase 3: Trident, packed to the gills, with two seats left at the bookstore counter. We downloaded some app to measure decibels, only to discover that it demanded a monthly fee for doing so (thank you, no; delete). Github has some Swift code to measure the noise, so maybe I’ll build the app instead, one of these days.

Questions of the Night

  1. What is the etymology of “kerfuffle” (because we must always have an etymology question)?

  2. What is the difference between a homonym and a homophone?
