Wednesday, June 19, 2019 — Fish Creek Falls

Phase 1: Whilst on vacation in Steamboat Springs, S elected to celebrate Humpday at Fish Creek Falls. Even mid-week, this is a popular hike: three or four cars had already queued at the parking gate when S arrived around 9am.

The trail starts downhill for a smooth quarter-mile to Lower Fish Creek Falls. This is a good spot for photographs. The trail then proceeds up — at roughly the same grade as the Mt. Sanitas South Trail — to the Upper Falls and beyond. S turned back at mile two, when, a thousand feet up and thirty-minutes shy of the Upper Falls, his water bottle was down by half. Better safe than sorry, ya know.

The event was not without mishap, however, as S managed, as usual, to slip in some mud. Very therapeutic.

The creek was veritably raging, swollen with rain and melting snow, with more snow in the forecast for later this week. Get your sandbags ready: the levee’s goin to break.

Phase 2: Blue Sage Pizza - slices of margherita and sausage.

Phase 3: Chocolate milk, back at the hotel.

Image Note: the cover image was photographed at Green Mountain Reservoir from Highway 9, halfway between Kremmling and Silverthorne. The prominent mountain seems to be Mt. Powell (unconfirmed).
