A Cloudy Respite
Sunday, October 18, 2020
A cold spell rolled in overnight, covering the front range in fog and clouds, and providing a welcome respite as fires raged north of the city.
S decided to try out the Green Mountain West Ridge Trail. Maybe some good views in the fog. Maybe the summit would rise above the clouds.
It was chilly in the forest, but warm on the final ascent. On the last quarter mile to the summit, S had to stop every twenty feet to catch his breath. Meanwhile, the clouds ebbed and flowed, over the ridge and off again, like waves washing over.
S reached the summit, crowded with youthful hikers, with somewhat relaxed mask-etiquette. He headed back down, and reached the parking lot parched and hungry. Then it was back down the twisty road to Chautauqua Park, and home.
