Phase 1: Shanahan Ridge North-South Short Loop

Setting out on a rare Thursday BNO, our fearless adventurers wandered west once more, to the green and pleasant woodland of Shanahan Ridge. The weather was calm at first, with only a few other hikers on the trail, but dark clouds loomed to the south. By the time our intrepid explorers had returned to the trailhead, the mammatus overhead were boiling and billowing, pummeling the treetops with blustery microbursts. Hikers who had trundled boisterously by only moments before, now turned tail and retreated to the safety of their vehicles.

Phase 2: NCAR Parking Lot

Wishing to avoid another encounter with the trailhead neighbors, S & D headed over to NCAR, where a surprisingly large number of cars occupied the parking lot. If NCAR were to invite or operate a food truck in the parking lot, they could undoubtedly make a small fortune selling supper to hungry hikers.

The wind, however, had increased; and so our fearless foragers supped separately, amid the tempest, in their cars.

A heath. Storm still.

Phase 3: NCAR Parking Lot

Still in their cars, our intrepid explorers nonetheless reviewed the single question that had arisen that evening (with regard to the recent “earthquake swarm” that has pummeled north Iceland in recent weeks):

Question of the Night

  1. How long is the Akureryi fjord?
The longest fjord in North Iceland, Eyjafjörður stretches some 60 km into the land.”
