Phase 1: Coalton Trail.
A pretty warm day, about 48 ºF as the sun was falling, no wind out on the prairie. I brought my telephoto lens, ostensibly in case I happened to spot any coyotes, which ended up being a fortunate choice.
The trail goes due west for 1.5 miles to a corner turn to the left. Lots of cyclists continue south and proceed along the Dirty Bismark loop, whereas I usually turn back at the corner to make a 3 mile out and back.
The sun had just dipped below the mountains when I reached the corner. On the way back, I saw a huge bird soaring up over the field to the south, and I quickly grabbed the camera and shot a few images, wondering if it might be an eagle. Too dark to tell for sure.
On the computer back home, I saw that it was indeed a bald eagle. Can’t remember having seen one before, so this was a very fortunate sighting. Hopefully the first of many.
