2021 Season Finale

All around them there was nothing but grassy prairie spreading to the edge of the sky.
— Laura Ingalls Wilder

D2, C, Fortran and S met at the Oerman-Roche trailhead for a pleasant 3.5 mile hike across the prairie mesa, with a sunset and the usual planets. Airplanes in their landing cycles, geese in their flying V's, the summer passing south, and daylight savings time too.

Another year of humpdays in the books, in the blogs, in the memories of those who walked the prairies, wandered up and down the hills, strode valiantly into the wild. Intrepid explorers all, breathing still, breathing heavy, laughing along with the usual and unusual people who bike and hike and wander and paint and speak about running for office. Bats wheeling and feasting overhead; they’re the only ones who love mosquitoes. For us it was sandwiches at dusk, sometimes brownies, sometimes beer.

Fortran learned a few more words, the rest of us forgot some. A few more homophones identified and catalogued.

We planned adventures, complained about work (as required by the BNO by-laws), and talked about gear. We huffed uphill, and stumbled back down again. We saw a lot of Shanahan Ridge, at least in the early half of the season, and discovered some new adventures at the Enchanted Mesa.

Wind and crickets, owls and coyotes. The sounds of sunset.

All in all, another successful BNO. Looking forward to doing it all again next year.
